How to Be Good at Improvisation

Have you ever wanted to be good at improvisation? Well, read this article and you'll be able to! Steps 1Stick to your topic.Often in improvisation, you will be given a topic or scenario which determines what, where and who you are. Stay in character. 2Don't try to be too funny.Yes, some amusing words may get a laugh, but don't lose a good story line by trying to be too funny! Work as partners but don't end up in a comedy contest, trying to be better than your partner. 3Act naturally; talk, act and sit as you usually do.Unless, of course, your character requires you to act differently. Focus on your partner; not the audience. 4Have fun!It can be scary to stand up in front of a crowd. Take a speech class to practice this and help you get over stage fright. 5Don't reject what your partner is saying. If he/she says, "I'm the best soccer player ever!", don't cut him/her off and say, "Really? I thought you were a gymnast!" Leave your partner some room to improvise too. 6Don't make anything violent or too crazy. That always ends the show. 7Relax and enjoy yourself.Being nervous can ruin the show. Relaxing and enjoying yourself can make the audience enjoy you. 8Pretend you are that character.Imagine how that character would move and act. Show that in your own actions. Tips *.One key word for improvisation is "enjoy." *.Don't worry what others will think. If anyone makes fun of you, tell them that you were simply acting and that what you did is not the normal you. *.Don't think too much about what you're going to say or do next. Just keep your imagination flowing and do or say the first thing that pops into your head, as long as it is appropriate to the topic you were given. *.Have fun! Just enjoy your time performing and your audience will too! Warnings *.Don't try to be too funny. *.Don't act shy and nervous (unless your character is that way). Doing this just makes you seem uncertain and unfocused.
